ELA (Reading):

Waynesboro Area School District uses a reading program called Wonders. It includes Guided Reading, Shared Reading, and Writing. Each week we will focus on a reading skill, such as character traits, main idea, text features, sequencing, compare and contrast, etc. We will read many stories as a class as we practice these skills each week.
Your child will be bring home 100 Book Challenge Books. Please make sure you read daily with your child and sign the reading log sheet each night. To help your child improve their comprehension skills, be sure to ask them questions about the book while reading and when finished. There is a sheet with question ideas in your child's binder.

During Writing we will practice word skills and writing techniques. Students will write reading response and several different genres over the course of the year. We will write friendly letters, how to books, fiction stories, and poetry. We will also work on word skills including synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, vowel sounds, rhyming, etc.

Every Friday we will take the spelling post-test.Students will not have nightly spelling homework, but it is important for them to practice their words during week. In your child's binder you will find a sheet with spelling practice ideas you can use at home. We will also be practicing these words in school as part of Daily 5 and our homework block. Your child will also be tested on their ability to read the high frequency words each week. At the end of the year required to read all 300 high frequency words. These words are on a blue sheet in their binder.

We will be using the Everyday Math 4 program. It is aligned with Common Core. We will learn a variety of skills such as place value, telling time, counting money, adding and subtracting two digit number, etc. One of our goals in second grade is to master single digit addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year. Please practice these facts nightly with your child and have them complete their daily fact practice sheet. There is an idea sheet in your child's binder with ideas to make practicing facts fun.

We will learning about many Science and Social Studies topics through the year. Some of these topics include animal and plant life cycles, physics of light, force and motion, aquatic ecosystems, map skills, local history, and economics.
