Principal's Message

Welcome to Mowrey Elementary!

On behalf of the Mowrey faculty and staff we wish our students and their families a sensational summer!

As part of the Waynesboro Area School District, Mowrey Elementary strives to “Educate and empower our students for future success.”  Our goal is to work as a team of faculty, staff, and families to provide our students a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment.

Message from Mrs. Goodine Principal:

I am excited for the opportunity to work with the Mowrey students, families, and staff.  Prior to assuming the role as Mowrey’s Principal, I served as Principal of Hooverville Elementary and Assistant Principal of Fairview Elementary.   Before entering administration I taught fourth and fifth grade at Mowrey Elementary.  I hope our mustang families are enjoying their summer break and are ready to begin another magnificent school year!  As you and your family prepare for the first day of school on August 21st  below are a few exciting updates and reminders.

Important Updates:

  • Back to School Night for grades 1 – 5 will be on Thursday, August 17th from 6:30PM – 8:00PM.
  • Back to School Night for kindergarten will be on Wednesday, August 16th.
  • The first day of school will be Monday, August 21st.
  • This school year will have scheduled two hour delays for teacher professional development. Please note the following dates for 2-hour delays: September 19th, October 17th, November 14th, Janurary 23rd, February 20th, March 20th, April 24th, and May 15th.
  • Reports cards will be distributed via the Community Portal. It is essential that each family sets up an account to view their child’s information. Please visit the WASD website and click under parents to view the Community Portal video.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  I look forward to seeing each of you on Thursday, August 17th for our Back to School Night!

Attendance Reminders:

When a child is absent from school, he must present a WRITTEN EXCUSE WITHIN 3 DAYS, signed by the parent or legal guardian, indicating the child’s full name, date(s) of absence(s) and the reason for being absent.

If no excuse is received, the absence will automatically be coded unexcused/illegal.  All unexcused/illegal absences that total three (3) days and beyond are referred to the building principals.  Act 29 of the Pennsylvania Public School Code makes the following provisions for any or all of the consequences for unexcused/illegal absence from school:

  • Payment of fine not exceeding $300, plus costs.
  • Required community service for a period of up to six (6) months.  This applies to parents of a child 12 years of age or younger.
  • Completion of a mandatory parenting education program.

Ten days absence will generate a letter to the home indicating a student’s attendance status and stating that at 10 days absence, a doctor’s excuse will be required for future absences to be excused/legal.

AM kindergarten children arriving after 8:50 AM will be considered tardy.  PM kindergarten children arriving after 12:50 PM will be considered tardy.  A child is permitted four (4) unexcused tardies per year.  An unexcused tardy is defined as one in which a child is not signed in by a parent, does not have a written acceptable excuse from a parent or does not have a doctor’s excuse for an appointment that day.

On the fourth unexcused tardy, a letter will be sent to the parent(s) alerting them of the number of tardies for their child/children.  If a student(s) acquires four (4) more tardies, an eight (8) day tardy letter will be sent to inform the parent(s) that any additional unexcused tardies will be coded as 1/2 day illegal absence.

If there are an exceptional number of tardies, even with a parent sign-in or excuse, we reserve the right to, at our discretion, begin coding them illegal and subject to the above stated consequences, to also include referral to the building principals.
