August News:

Dear Families,

Hello!  I am pleased to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year!  We have a bright and exciting school year ahead of us!

Here is some important info for 1st grade:

  • SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  The following list of supplies was requested for your child

for the first grade school year.  Please make sure to send in all of these supplies

at Open House night.  Please follow the enclosed directions on how to organize your child’s supplies.  This will save us an enormous amount of time on the first day of school!

Requested First Grade Supplies from the District:

  • 1 pencil box
  • 1 pack of Ticonderoga pencils
  • 2 24 packs of crayons
  • 2 packs of dry erase markers
  • 1 yellow highlighter
  • 3 large pink erasers
  • 4 large glue sticks
  • 1 clean sock or dry eraser
  • 5 two pocket plastic folders with clasps
  • 1 pair of headphones
  • 1 box of tissues
  • 1 bottle of hand sanitizer
  • 1 box of Ziploc sandwich bags
  • Scissors

In addition I would ask for these additional supplies:

    * 1 pack of 8-10 count skinny markers

    • ENTERING SCHOOL:  Bus riders and car riders are escorted by teachers into the building on the first few days of school.  Bus riders will use the door at the front entrance and car riders will use the door at the back entrance near the small playground.  Car riders should arrive between 8:25 – 8:35 am.  There are teachers on duty at that time and they will help the students find their right line to stand in.  Many teachers will be available to escort the children to their classrooms.  We do not allow parents to come in with their child because of security concerns.  If you need to come in with them, you will have to take them to the front office and sign them in.
    • LUNCH:  A menu for the month will be sent home during the first week of school.

At lunch time the first grade teachers will be taking their classes to lunch and going over the rules and procedures for the cafeteria.  We will stay at lunch and help every child through the line on the first day and probably for several weeks until they are familiar with the routines.  The lunch prices are as follows:

Breakfast

Lunch

Regular Price

$1.40

$2.40

Reduced Price

$0.30

$0.40

You will receive information from the school district on the “smart card” and also about how to apply for free and reduced lunch.  Please help your child learn their account number.  They will be typing it every day on a keypad in the lunch line.  Also, it is an excellent idea to put any lunch money you send to school in an envelope with your child’s name on the front.  This prevents the situation where the money is used for some other purpose.

  • DISMISSAL:  Please return the attached information sheet at Open House night to indicate with which dismissal group your child will be leaving.

    • BUS RIDERS:  If your child rides the bus, please include the bus number on the attached sheet and we will make sure that they get on the correct bus afterschool.  If you are unsure of the bus number, please call the Clayton Avenue office at 762-1191.  Ask for Missie Baer at ext. 1264.  She will be able to help you.
    • CAR RIDERS:  Car riders are dismissed at the back door around 3:25. For your child’s safety, they are not allowed to run across the parking lot to your car.  You must park your vehicle and walk to greet your child.  Please make sure your child knows who will be meeting them and remind them to stay with their teacher until they see that person.

  • OPEN HOUSE:  Mowrey will be having an Open House night.  It will be held on Thursday, August 17th from 6:30 to 7:15 pm.  Please make every effort to come.  This is a great time for your child to visit, tour the classroom and the school, and ask questions. Please bring supplies and the yellow helpful information sheet to the Open House.

As parents, you are the driving force in your child’s life and in their education.  Together, we can make this year a fabulous one, full of learning and growth for your child!

If you should have any questions, please feel free to email me at abby_fisher@wasdpa.org or call the school at 762-1191.  I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.

Welcome to an exciting school year!

Happy Fall!!!  We are working so hard in our new reading curriculum called Wonders.  The students have been reading fiction and non-fiction stories, searching for key details, and writing responses to prompts.  They are reading and writing their high frequency words and practicing patterned words for their spelling lists.

In math, the students have been manipulating their number grids to solve word problems and number models.  We will be working through Unit 3 this month.  Unit 3 will focus more on addition and subtraction strategies.  The students will be playing the following games: Domino Top-It, Roll and Total, High Roller, Penny-Dice, Bunny Hop, Rolling for 50 and Penny Plate.

We will be focusing on Social Studies during the content block of the day.  We will begin the month by discussing Fire Safety with the students.  This will include a fire drill with a sweet treat for the students.  We will begin our Map Skills unit in the middle of the month.  The students will be working through a Map Skills workbook focusing on map symbols and main directions.  We will end the month by preparing for an election of our first grade mascot.  We will take a look at three literary characters and discuss the characteristics of each character.  We will hold a mock election on November 8th to elect our mascot.

We will be having our fall field trip this month.  Please make sure you signed and returned the permission slip for the Renfrew Trip!
