Miss Kara Myers

Hello My Name Is...

Miss Kara Myers

I am a graduate of Shippensburg University. I currently live in Greencastle, PA. This will be my second year at Mowrey Elementary and I am very excited to be your child's second grade teacher! Together I hope that we can make this a successful year for your child. In order to do this we must communicate. The best way to reach me is by e-mail, kara_myers@wasdpa.org. I try to answer e-mails as timely as I can. You can also reach me between the hours of 8:10-3:40 by calling (717)-762-1191 ext. 1600. If I cannot come to the phone, I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Important General Information

Book Bags/Binders: Your child should have a book bag and a binder. These should be brought to school each day.

Behavior Calendars: Each day your child will color in their day on their behavior calendars. These can be found in their binders. Please look at this with your child every night and initial it.

Homework: Look in your child's homework folder every night. If you signed the contract for your child to participate in "100 Book Challenge", reading should be done for at least 15 minutes each night. Make sure that you also sign the log sheet in your child's "100 Book Challenge" folder. This folder should come back to school every day. Your child will bring home 2 books and will have the chance to exchange books each morning.

Lunch Money: Please send lunch money to school in an envelope with your child's name and lunch ID number on it.

Car Riders: Children who are being picked up will be walked to the back lobby.  Car riders must have a note if this is not their daily form of transportation.

Buses: If your child will not be riding the bus on a certain day, please send a note or call the office. Without a note or phone call I will have to send them on the bus. Please try to help avoid any confusion.

Early Dismissals: If your child has an appointment and needs to leave early, please see the secretary in the office.

Birthdays: You are welcome to send in a snack or drop it off to the office anytime before 3:00 if you wish to do so. Please send me an e-mail or a note if you are planning to do this so that I can inform you of allergies and the number of students. Party invitations are NOT welcome at school unless there is one for each child in our class.

Bathroom: There is not a bathroom in our classroom. Your child will have the opportunity to use the bathroom when they arrive in the morning, before recess, and at various times during the day. Students are not allowed to use the bathroom during guided reading groups or while I am teaching to the entire class. Please discuss the importance of going to the bathroom quickly and quietly with your child, as I will not always be there to monitor them.

Rules: Classroom rules will be explained on the first day of school and reviewed frequently. A copy of the classroom discipline policy will be sent home. Please read over this and discuss it once again with your child at home.

Parent Handbook: Please read over this. Sign and return the last page to school with your child.

Curriculum Information

Math: Our district uses the Everyday Math program. We will work on math concepts and activities for 60 minutes each day. Your child will be responsible for homework called Home Links, these should be returned the following school day.

Content: Science and social studies will be taught during our content block. Some concepts we will learn about include: life cycles of plants and butterflies, physics of light, forces and motion, and map skills.

Guided Reading: This is our small group reading lessons. Your child will be working on reading strategies to become a stronger reader. We will set specific reading goals to work on and will focus on building comprehension, accuracy, and fluency.

Wonders: Wonders is a newly adopted reading program. Each week students will be practicing reading (comprehension, fluency, accuracy), writing, grammar, vocabulary, and phonics associated with the program.

Spelling Lists & High Frequency Words: Your child will also have a weekly spelling list. The goal is for your child to read these words fluently by recognizing them, rather than sounding them out. Students will be be taught these words throughout the year and assessed each marking period. Second grade has approximately 300 high frequency words that they will learn by the end of the year. They must be able to read and spell only the words that are bolded on their spelling lists. If the high frequency word is not bolded, your child only needs to be able to read the word.
